The
Problem
A serious problem exists among newborns...
Every day in Atlanta hospitals nursery beds sit filled with babies
that do not need to be there but have no where else to go. Abusive
or drug addicted parents often prevent these babies from returning
home, and the hospital has to "board" homeless babies until they
can be placed in foster or adoptive homes.
The costs of
this problem are two-fold:
·the hospital and
taxpayers have to pay the exorbitant costs of keeping babies in
hospital beds long past the time when they could be safely discharged;
·the
stunted development of the children, who now have to spend some
part of their formative years in the sterile environment
of a hospital rather than a warm, loving home.
